Abstract
Based on personal experience as a documentary filmmaker both inside and outside of the system, this article discusses the origins and development of Chinese independent documentaries. It examines a few points of origin—the zeitgeist of ‘Facing the World’, NHK and the BBC, the Beijing Broadcasting Institute, and television stations—and analyses the process of the Chinese independent documentary movement, expressing the author’s perplexity regarding its significance.
