The film is also set in Tongling, Anhui province, at the 140-year-old Qingzhixiang ferry terminal, in 1998, when the ferry company to which it belonged was restructured as a joint-stock company, and when laid-off workers smashed the ferry and forced it to stop. In this film, Guo Xizhi chooses three families affected by the ferry suspension as "characters" and uses the camera to "focus on the daily lives of his subjects and their choices for their own survival".
