The online film exhibition ‘Contemporary Murmurings of China’s New Ethnic Minorities’ is curated by CIFA’s guest curator, the director Gu Xue. The seven filmmakers participating in the exhibition are from the Tibetan, Mongol, Uyghur, and Ewenki ethnic groups in China. Most of them were born in the 1990s and are a new and emerging force in minority filmmaking today. The seven short films present the social, cultural, and spiritual life of ethnic minorities in a manner rarely seen in mainstream images and media. The exhibition is divided into three spaces: ‘Film Screenings’, ‘Meet the Filmmakers’, and ‘Curator’s Notes’. ‘Meet the Filmmakers’ includes seven video interviews produced by the curator, in which the seven filmmakers talk about the relationship between their personal growth, ethnic identity, and expressive video practice. From the world of the filmmakers’ images to the real world in which they live, we hope that this exhibition will bring attention to this group of young, creative, and exploratory filmmakers, and rich and diverse cultures represented in their work.
The exhibition runs from 15 November — 15 December and can be viewed on the official website of the Chinese Independent Film Archive. You are also welcome to join guest Zeng Jinyan at the directors’ online meetup on 11 December at 9pm CET, 1pm London time, and 8am New York time to talk live with the seven filmmakers and curator.
Registration is required. After registration, you will receive a Zoom link to attend 2 days in advance of the event.
